Joyful, joyful, to be alive at the beach! Make every day count.
Imagine your walls with these swimmy fishes decorating them. Luxe. Gorgeous. Fun.
The painting demonstrates traditional oil painting technique. The ‘grisaille and glaze’ method has been used since oil painting was first made. Fish 1 is the sketch, Fish 2 is the grisaille, and Fish 3 has the glaze applied. All in all, a pretty result with ancient historic roots.
Tie into history! Great American Art is here for the catching.
Tomorrow morning I’ll be painting for the folks of the Austin Palette Club. They meet on Tuesdays from 10 AM -Noon at the Lamar Senior Activity Center. The center is at 2874 Shoal Crest Avenue, Austin, TX 78705, just up the hill one block east of Lamar. Check out the plug for my demo below from the president of the APC, it’s pretty glowing. I’m absolutely tickled pink! Come meet some nice people who love art and watch me do my song and dance.
See you there with my smock on,
AUSTIN PALETTE CLUB MEETING NOTICE : Tuesday, February 11, 2020, 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM Dear APC Members; I know you all love the painting demos best of all and this week, we are going to be treated to an oil painting demo by one of our newest members, ARNICA GRACE !
Arnica is a professional artist and currently she’s an instructor at Cordovan Arts in Round Rock and Austin. Arnica is an Honors Graduate College of Fine Arts from UT Austin in 2001, and she has an extensive list of exhibits and shows to her credit. Check out the list on her “About” page on her website for more information. Arnica is full of joyful energy and enthusiasm for her art and it’s infectious. In her own words:
“In 2020 I have the honor of leading other painters to find joy in their various media. I teach in Round Rock and Austin, TX at Cordovan Arts. Also, the workshops I get to host at The Round Rock Downtowner Gallery have been a lot of fun! I hope to continue to meet many more new and wonderful artists through my teaching programs.Working in many media keeps me on my toes. I love making images by hand. It’s a craft that keeps me learning. Weekly painting sessions with other artists are always fun, and I have had the privilege of painting the model from life with others for many many years. People are fascinating, landscapes are lovely. Oil paints are great, acrylics are quick. Watercolor was my focus in college, having gotten to study with Bill Wyman, noteworthy Texas Artist and professor at UT (not the Rolling Stones bass player.)”Here’s a link to her website : www.arnicagrace.com I know you will enjoy looking at the wonderful artwork on Arnica’s website. She “pushes” color expertly and her brush strokes are painted in a controlled loose style that infuses energy and action in her paintings. Come learn how she makes magic on canvas this week! Got to wonder what this pelican is thinking. Sunshine for nothing and fish for free?

Every cloud has a silver lining. These are golden. What could be better than the sun peeking out at you at the end of a cloudy day? Come visit the Port Aransas Art Center today and enjoy the glow.
This work is a marvel of layering. The colors shift as the daylight changes. In the evening, the darker tones are dominant, but midday the glazes of blue and violet are strongest. Come see for yourself!
If you like the beach, try the view from Beachgate Condosuites and Hotel. Room 533 has a very nice one! Here is a plein air painting done on that very balcony by Arnica Grace. Unframed, it’s yours for just $80. Ships mounted on a board ready to be framed and hung in your favorite space.
The plein air method was popularized by the French Impressionists. “Plein air painting is about leaving the four walls of your studio behind and experiencing painting and drawing in the landscape. The practice goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists. Their desire to paint light and its changing, ephemeral qualities, coupled with the creation of transportable paint tubes and the box easel—the precursor to the plein air easels of today—allowed artists the freedom to paint “en plein air,” which is the French expression for “in the open air.” –
It’s not a sunny day, but the world offers beauty anyway. Sometimes a little mist on your nose is just the right thing. With layers of impasto and glazing, this painting glows from within. The heavy impasto- a technique of laying on paint so thickly that it stands out from a surface- adds character and form.
Arnica Grace has been known to use painting knives- a flexible metal blade. This device helps her to put down the thick paint she likes to see in some of her larger works. This being a Big Big Sky, she uses the painting knife with gusto! Energy and form, peace and activity, layers of color sing in a unique harmony.
Collections begin with one piece. This is a good cornerstone for the foundation of your own art empire. Enjoy!
